Content

A Rectangular Current Test System is a high-voltage electrical testing device specifically designed to generate rectangular-wave current pulses with specified durations (such as 1 ms, 2 ms, etc.). It is mainly used to evaluate the energy withstand capability and long-duration operating duty characteristics of surge arresters, especially metal oxide varistor (MOV) arresters.

Applications

RCTS-2ms Rectangular Current Test System can output rectangular current wave with different duration time (1ms, 2.0ms, 2.4ms or 2.8ms). The test system is used for carrying Energy Withstand Test and Long Duration Operating Duty Test. The test system contends the requirements of IEC 60099-4 and relevant standards.

Features

High-precision waveform control: The system features excellent current stability and can provide waveform characteristics that meet testing requirements, including wavefront shape, pulse duration, and half-peak time tolerances.

Discharge and energy storage system: It adopts a high-capacity capacitor bank and a carefully designed control circuit (such as an RC charge-discharge network) to ensure instantaneous surge current output and high waveform purity.

Automation and digital measurement: Integrated with a digital recorder and computer-aided evaluation software, the system can accurately capture pulse parameters and automatically analyze voltage and current variations of the test object, as well as residual voltage characteristics.

Maintenance Information

To ensure the safety and accuracy of the system under high-voltage and high-current discharge conditions, the following daily and periodic maintenance is recommended:

Daily inspection: Check whether the discharge circuit connections are secure, verify that the grounding wire is intact, and inspect the equipment surface for any signs of burn marks caused by discharge.

Monthly cleaning: Remove dust and dirt from the equipment surface, with particular attention to high-voltage capacitor banks and resistor surfaces, to prevent tracking or short circuits caused by dust accumulation.

Insulation testing: Perform regular insulation resistance tests on the high-voltage output terminals to ensure that the insulation performance to ground complies with safety standards.

FAQ

1. What is the core purpose of a rectangular current test system?

It is mainly used to perform energy withstand tests and long-duration operating duty tests. The system simulates high-energy, long-duration current stresses that surge protective devices are exposed to in real power grid environments, in order to verify the electrical integrity and aging threshold of the device.

2. What types of current waveforms can the system generate?

The system is capable of generating rectangular current pulse waveforms with different durations. According to international high-voltage standards such as IEC 60099-4. typical waveform durations include 1.0 ms, 2.0 ms, 2.4 ms, and 2.8 ms.

3. Which industries does this test system mainly serve?

Power systems: Quality inspection of high-voltage transmission and distribution equipment, surge arresters, and zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors.

Telecommunications and aerospace: Lightning protection testing for communication base station surge protection devices, as well as lightning effect protection testing for aerospace materials and structures.

Semiconductors and electronics: Robustness analysis of ESD protection circuits at the chip level (e.g., when used in combination with TLP transmission line pulse testing systems).

4. What is the difference between rectangular wave testing and standard lightning impulse testing (e.g., 8/20 μs)?

Standard lightning impulse testing (such as 8/20 μs) simulates a very short transient peak pulse and mainly evaluates the clamping voltage capability of a device. In contrast, rectangular wave current testing features a longer front time and a fixed flat-top duration, and it primarily evaluates the device’s ability to withstand and dissipate large amounts of thermal energy over time (energy absorption capability).

5. What are the key technical specifications of the system?

Key parameters for evaluating such a test system include:

Maximum output peak current (ranging from several kiloamperes to tens of kiloamperes)

Pulse duration accuracy

Energy injection capability (evaluated in joules per rated voltage)

Waveform parameter tolerances (e.g., flat-top duration and half-value time must comply with international standards)
