ASTM E162 is one most widely used test standard to evaluate the propagation properties of material in USA. The heat resource use gas radiant panel heating and a gas burner ignited. This machine is designed according to ASTM E162 and ASTM D 3675 standards; The device implements test methods to assess combustion properties of the material surface flaming.

The basic principle of the radiant panel flame spread test is to expose a sample to a clearly calibrated radiant flux and measure the ignition time, flame spread, and final extinction time.
During the test, the sample is typically placed in a vertical position adjacent to the radiant panel, exposed to the clearly calibrated radiant flux. The pilot flame approaches the test sample but does not contact it, igniting the heated end of the sample by vaporized gases on the surface.
After ignition, the development of the flame front is recorded, along with the time it takes for the flame front to burn horizontally across the sample surface to reach various calibrated distances. Depending on the standard, the test may terminate when the sample burns to a specified mark, after 15 minutes, or when the temperature in the fume hood stabilizes.
