Viscosity is defined as the rate of a fluid’s internal resistance to flow. Intermolecular force, molecular mass and temperature are considered as the main factors effecting the viscosity. Fluids that have directly proportional flow rate with friction resistance are called as Newtonian fluids. Viscosity values of Newtonian fluids are commonly determined in terms of kinematic viscosity. Best method to measure kinematic viscosity of Newtonian fluids is by using capillary (kinematic) viscometers. Testing principle: The liquid passes through a calibrated glass capillary under the action of gravity, and the flow time is measured to calculate the kinematic viscosity (ν=K × t, where K is the capillary constant and t is the flow time).
Applicable liquids: transparent liquids (such as lubricating oil) and opaque liquids (such as heavy oil, asphaltene solution).
Temperature control: precise constant temperature bath (such as 40 ℃± 0.005 ℃, 100 ℃± 0.005 ℃) to ensure consistency of testing conditions.
