Product Introduction:
The Volume Surface Resistivity Tester operates by applying a known DC voltage across a material sample and precisely measuring the resulting current. Using Ohm's Law (R = V/I), the instrument calculates the resistance. This resistance value is then converted into resistivity by incorporating geometric factors related to the electrode configuration and sample dimensions.8 Volume resistivity, expressed in Ohm-centimeters ($\Omega \cdot$cm) or Ohm-meters ($\Omega \cdot$m), is determined by measuring current flow through the material's thickness.9 Surface resistivity, expressed in Ohms per square (Ω/square), is determined by measuring current flow across the material's surface between two points.10 Different electrode geometries are employed for each measurement type to isolate the current paths and ensure accurate results. These testers can measure over an extremely wide range of resistance values, from low Ohms (for conductive materials) to very high TeraOhms or PetaOhms (for excellent insulators). The electrification time (the duration the voltage is applied before reading the current) is a critical parameter for insulating materials whose resistance changes over time.
The instrument is widely used for characterizing the electrical properties of:
Electrical insulating materials (plastics, ceramics, rubber, films, paper, textiles)11
Static dissipative materials used in ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) control applications (flooring, worksurfaces, packaging, garments)
Conductive materials and coatings
Antistatic materials
Product Advantages:
Measures Fundamental Electrical Properties: Provides essential, quantitative data on how materials resist electrical current flow through their bulk and across their surface.
Crucial for Material Characterization: Enables accurate classification of materials as conductive, static dissipative, or insulating according to industry standards.
Essential for ESD Control: Vital for verifying that materials used in static-sensitive environments meet the required resistance levels to prevent electrostatic discharge events.
Supports Quality Control and R&D: Used for incoming material inspection, monitoring production processes, and developing new materials with specific electrical properties.
Standard Compliant: Designed to perform measurements according to numerous international and national standards for resistivity testing.
Wide Measurement Range: Capable of measuring resistance across many orders of magnitude, from low to extremely high values.
Objective and Repeatable Results: Provides numerical data under controlled test conditions.
