Why care about Shore hardness?

What is Shore Hardness and how is it measured? wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer
Shore durometer is a device used to measure the hardness of materials, usually polymers, elastomers and rubbers. Named after its inventor, Albert Ferdinand Shore, the Shore durometer offers different hardness balances for measuring the robustness of different materials. wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer

The Shore D hardness technique is a standardized test used throughout the industry, typically using the ASTM D2240 and ISO 868 test methods to measure the depth of penetration of an indenter. Shore hardness is measured on a scale of 0 to 100 and the reading is dimensionless. The result of each scale is between 0 and 100, with higher numbers indicating higher hardness. wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer

How does the Shore hardness test work? wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer
Shore D hardness is a standardized test that measures the penetration depth of a specific invader. wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer
Like many other hardness tests, a durometer measures the depth of an indentation in a material caused by a specified force on a standardized presser foot. This depth depends on the hardness of the material, the viscoelasticity, the shape of the presser foot and the duration of the test. The ASTM D2240 durometer allows measurement of initial hardness or indentation hardness after a specified time. Basic testing requires applying force in a consistent manner, without vibration, and measuring hardness (depression depth). Iftimed hardness is required, apply force for the desired time and then take a reading. The material to be tested must be at least 0.25 in. (6 mm) thick. wN9Textile Testing Instruments, Testing Equipment Manufacturer
